Shafts and Heads2009/10 Heads--Will I need to buy a new head to comply with the new regulations? In order to pick up the pace of the game and to cut down on all of those boring passes that college teams make around the crease as part of their set offense, the NCAA has promulgated new rules effective January 1, 2010. These rules change the dimensions of lacrosse heads to make the throat of the head larger and reduce the "pinch." The NCAA wants lacrosse to be a more wide open sport with more fast breaks and less controlled passing. These new head dimensions will make it more difficult, they think, for players to maintain possession of the ball. Any player who plays for a college team, whether it be varsity or club, must use the new compliant heads. Tennesse high schools play under NCAA rules, not the NFHS rules which have not changed, so it would appear that the new head rules mandated by the NCAA would apply in Tennessee. However, it is our understanding that the referees will not be enforcing the new narrower head dimensions during the 2009-2010 season.
